The Moriarty Collection – Sustainable Luxury
At the recent London Packaging show, we showcased three new additions to our growing Moriarty Collection.
“The Moriarty Collection was born from our desire to push the boundaries of sustainable packaging while preserving the tactile richness and sophistication of premium products,” says LB Odendaal, Head of IPL Design at IPL Packaging. “Balancing eco-consciousness with the high-end appeal that consumers expect from luxury products is an ongoing challenge that IPL’s NPD and innovation teams are continually working to address.”
“It’s both a challenge and an opportunity for us as packaging designers and suppliers,” he continues. “And the problem isn’t simply using recyclable materials – it’s about combining them in ways that align with the premium feel expected in luxury markets. This extends from form into function, meaning that sustainability – when done right – becomes a brand asset rather than a compromise.”
“Part of the challenge is how to elevate recyclable materials, to the same prestige as traditionally unsustainable options like wood, and how to construct eco-friendly packaging alternatives that are not only luxurious looking but also kerbside recyclable or reusable.”
“By also reimagining how packaging components can be separated for recycling or repurposed for multiple uses, luxury designs can transform sustainability into an active part of the user experience,” he concludes.

The Jekyll & Hyde Pack: A Dual Identity in Design
At the forefront of the collection is the Jekyll & Hyde Pack, which offers a fresh take on premium eco-packaging. Its standout feature is the full artwork rotation enabled by a 3-band hinge, allowing the lid to rotate completely, transforming the pack from one design to another.
This dynamic shift between two distinct visual identities encapsulates the duality of sustainability and luxury, offering an innovative way to engage consumers while being fully recyclable. The pack’s construction uses an innovative recycled grey-board lamination process, as an alternative to MDF as well as paper-based fitments, a sustainable alternative to EVA and other plastic fitments.
The Roller Door Pack: Sustainable Elegance in Motion
Another new member of the Moriarty Collection is the Rolltop Desk Pack. Inspired by the tambour doors found in vintage desks. Through an intense process of prototyping IPL Design and NPD were able to achieve success using only paper and graybeard, in a structure usually exclusively achieved in wood. This design features an innovative tuck-flap closure, actively avoiding the use of magnets, which offers a smooth, elegant opening mechanism.
The kraft paper-wrapped pack features offset printed branding and combines the feel of luxury with fully recyclable materials. With its kerbside recyclable construction, the Roller Door pack reimagines how premium goods can be presented sustainably.
Hybrid Multi-Material Boxes: Designing for the Future
IPL’s design ethos extends to hybrid solutions that incorporate separable materials. These multi-material boxes – made from paper, metal, and other kerbside recyclable elements – are engineered so the different components can be easily separated, envisioning potential second-use functionality for custom closure elements after removal for recycling.
This approach allows for the combined use of premium materials, such as thermoformed paper pulp, glass, metal or bio-plastics, while ensuring the packaging remains recyclable or biodegradable. This hybrid design offers brands the flexibility to reach any desired level of luxury while staying committed to sustainability.
